Letter from Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,                                                     9th October 2017

We are now in the last 2 weeks of term. How quickly the time has flown. Our Year 7s have settled in beautifully and we are all in the rhythms of the new school day. I have really enjoyed popping in to many lessons last week and seeing great learning in place.

We have our Open Evening on Thursday 12th October at 6pm. Many thanks to those students who are assisting in the evening. It is a really important event and an opportunity for students to really show how proud they are of our school by joining in showing our different areas to prospective students and parents. Your views and encouragement are important too in helping others to learn about our school in the community. If you are happy with what your child is doing in school and how they are progressing please let others know. I have been really moved by the positive feedback we have received from parents following our greatly improved exam results this summer, and the practical support we gain in ensuring children are well equipped and ready to learn. Working together is so powerful.

Some of our Year 11 students are volunteering weekly at the Haverhill Foodbank. On the initial visit this week they were struck by how low stocks are at the Foodbank and so we are opening a collection point at the school, where we will run a house competition until Christmas. Donations can be given to Mrs Baldwin in B26 and our children will take donations weekly to the food bank. Items such as cereal, tinned food, biscuits, sugar, tea, coffee, pasta sauce and UHT milk are currently under stocked.

We have seen excellent uptake of after school activities, some of our year 7 students have told me they are staying after school for 4 evenings per week to take part in different clubs and groups. This is a huge part of school life and I really encourage you to talk to your child about taking part in these additional opportunities. It has been wonderful to see so many sports fixtures taking place in the past weeks. A reminder that we share lots of the activities in our school through our twitter feed @castlemanor so do follow us if you are a twitter user.

A reminder that we have a non pupil day on Friday 13th October. On this day our staff will be undertaking their performance management and setting new targets for the upcoming year.

Finally please find enclosed a nomination form and details for applying for the position as Parent Governor. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in the important role. Full training and support is given and the role involves attending 6 meetings of 2 hour length per academic year in the evenings and then visiting the school 3 times per year during the school day. If this is something that interests you and you would like to find out more please do contact me on VWhitcombe@castlemanor.org.uk

Yours sincerely,

Vanessa Whitcombe
