Letter from Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,                                              11th September 2017

This is my first letter of the term and I welcome all parents of students who have joined our school, both in Year 7 and in other year groups throughout the school where we welcomed several new students to our community.

We have started the term feeling exceptionally positive. Our summer exam results were fantastic. Our Year 11 and Year 13 of last year are off to various sixth forms, colleges and University, as well as apprenticeships and degree level apprenticeships. I am exceptionally proud of our outcomes this year, which has shown a rapid increase in results from 46% A*-C GCSE in English and Maths in 2016 to 62% equivalent in 2017. Our Maths results increased from 50% to 74% and English from 69% to 71%. These results put us around the top 5% across the country for similar schools with children at similar starting points and are really to be celebrated.

Our school is developing very well indeed, but there is still a huge amount that we want to do to improve even further. Parental engagement and support allows us to work together for the benefit of all of our children. I want to thank you for your support this week with some significant changes. We have set our expectations even higher at the beginning of this year to allow us to focus even further on learning well in school. Your support ensuring that children have the correct equipment and are not using mobile phones in school is allowing teachers to really concentrate on teaching. Our new policy of a 30 minute detention after school for any students who receive a consequence 3 outlines very clearly our intention to eliminate any disruptions to learning.

This week has been very positive, with all students settling well. We are adapting to all being on the one site and to our split lunch time. To facilitate this we have opened a new ‘café style’ canteen area for students to use as well as the traditional canteen. I am launching a competition for students to suggest new names for these areas in the next week.

We are holding a settling in evening for new Year 7 parents and students on 20th  September and further details will be sent to you this week. We are also holding Kick Start evenings for all other Year groups on 28th September, again further details to follow.

As always please do get in touch with me if you wish to, the best contact method is by email on VWhitcombe@castlemanor.org.uk or you can contact my PA, Gill Mitchell on GMitchell@castlemanor.org.uk if you would like to book an appointment to come and meet with me.

I told students in my assembly this week that my two wishes for them this year was for them to work hard and be kind. We will continue to focus on this as the term goes on.

Yours sincerely,

Vanessa Whitcombe
